BOOK 1, MACKENZIE COUNTRY SERIES

When life drowns you in lemons, to hell with making lemonade. I wanted to burn the whole world. But eighteen months from the day my life was torn apart, I’m tired of the anger. Tired of the nightmares. Tired of putting one foot in front of the other just trying to survive. Three months on a high country sheep station in the middle of nowhere is exactly the reboot I need. A chance to break free. To breathe again. To find a way forward.

I put my entire life on hold and head south to Mackenzie Country. But falli
ng for the captivating young station boss was never part of the plan. Holden Miller might be smart and sexy and push all my dusty buttons, but we come from two different worlds. I’m not looking for a relationship. I’m not interested in love. I’m done with all that.

But Holden doesn’t care about my rules. Nestled safely in the arms of the spectacular Southern Alps, on an isolated sheep farm at the top of the world, Holden begins knitting my battered heart together one careful stitch at a time. And with every pass of the thread, every braid of the river on our doorstep, I catch a tantalising glimpse of something I’d almost given up on.

Happiness, and maybe even love.

If I have the courage to reach out and grab them.

Note: This book contains references to the past death of a child and PTSD.

This hugely popular series is set in the Mackenzie Country of New Zealand where impossibly large merino sheep stations push high into the Southern Alps. The stories are set around two neighbouring sheep stations, the men who live and work there, and the small town that services the region.

Expect loads of romance and swoon/ grief/ recovery/ discovering new life/ dealing with homophobia/ coping with pressure/ fish-out-of-water/ opposites attract, and major found family vibes.

Love this book

This book in this series is by far one of my favourite, I’ve read the whole series, I loved all of the books! Holden and Gil had great chemistry together even with all the issues they both had in their personal life. This is one of my favourite tropes of life on a farm.

This book!!! <3

I first bought this as an e-book when it was released and read it after about a week and it blew me away. I can honestly say that this book changed the way I read and experience MM romance, even though I had been reading this genre for about 4-5 years by the time this book was released .

When the audio book was released I had to get it as well and it didn't disappoint. Gary Furlong is doing a wonderful job in making Gil and Holden coming alive. It gave me a new dimension to what I had experienced reading it and now it is one of my go to audiobooks when I want a feel good book.

The book is such a perfect mix of sweetness, serious issues and romance. I love Jay's writing style and how she builds an entire world for us to experience.
Gil and Holden are adorable, while still experiencing real life problems.
(There is mention of the loss of a child, so if that is a trigger for you this book might not be for you even though it is handled with a lot of care and sensitivity).

Holden is the owner of a sheep station in southern New Zealand and his new (temporary) domestic manager Gil is hot! What Holden doesn't know is that Gil is gay as well.
Gil on the other hand, has taken this job to get away from his past life, where he lost his daughter and as a result of this his marriage also disintegrated. When he spots Holden for the first time his dormant libido makes itself known to him. He is still very fragile after what has happened in his life and does not want to feel anything for Holden, even less admit this to Holden.
Holden on the other hand DOES want a relationship, something lasting for the very first time in his life and I often thank him for being so persistent and open with his feelings for Gil. Without Holden, Gil might never have gotten over the death of his daughter and the end of his marriage.
I love the two of them, then humanity of their lives we get to experience in their story.

Absolutely 5 out of 5 stars!

Absolutely loved

Wow. Just wow. I did not want to put this book down. What an emotional ride we took with Gil and Holden.

Gil takes a job where he least expects it to try to come to terms with grief and losing everything. He meets Holden who is running sheep station. Holden has his own battles as he is going to be running a farm, his mom is stepping away for sometime, and granddad is not being kind.
Gil and Holden are exactly what each other needed giving love and most of all support.

I can’t even tell you how I felt being inside this book and on the farm with the crew. Beautiful location and supporting found family. I think what I liked most about the men is how they pushed each other to communicate. Get it out with so we can deal and find a solution. Just an absolute beautiful love story.

I can’t wait for the next book

Stunning

Jay Hogan outdid herself with this beauty. Two incredible men set in the stunning New Zealand countryside. It’s tender and heartwarming.

Jay maneuvered us through some incredible grief and loss with such care and honesty. I felt like I was there right alongside Gil. But also Holden, who is also managing the loss of his grandfather to dementia.

When this unlikely pair meet in the wilds of the Southern Alps, both are completely taken by surprise by their attraction and connection. Day by day Gil heals, in part thanks to the powers of Mackenzie County, but also because of the man ten years his junior. Not to mention the rest of the found family they are surrounded by. His is a powerful story.

When they both start opening up to the other, and sharing their hearts, you will melt. I love how well they communicate with one another. Sometimes it requires a helping hand from one of the many people who have their back, but they are both so open. And sappy. And silly. And hot!

This had everything I love in a romance. A few tears, a few laughs, and a lot of swooning.

My first audiobook EVER!

I’ll start with the fact that I never understood the appeal of “listening” to a book bcs although I can understand that it’s convenient in many cases, but every time I tried to persuade myself to listen to the book, I couldn’t even get through one chapter..the voices, speaking manner were always so wrong.. my characters didn't sound like that in my head..until this book..I'm so happy that I gave it a try bcs it absolutely destroyed me and then put me together! It was so heartbreakingly beautiful! These characters and their struggles and their story captured me from the start and never let go.. It was painful but at the same time so heartwarming.. and now I want to listen to more of her audios))
I love all of the books by Jay Hogan but this is probably one of my favorites..
Highly recommend it!
